Best Horror I Missed in 2020

Now that 2021 has finally passed, I can write my last writeup for the year. This will mostly consist of fun statistics I tracked throughout the year, which will help me establish what sort of goals I’ll have for 2022.

TOTAL MOVIES WATCHED

From January to December, I watched a total of 423 horror films. This is significantly less than 2020 where I watched upwards of 520. I attribute this to some aspects of life returning closer to normalcy rather than perpetual lockdown.

YEARS

When were all the movies I watched made?

1950s: 3

1960s: 9

1970s: 42

1980s: 75

1990s: 57

2000s: 28

2010s: 31

2020s: 164

Unreleased (Film Festival Releases without wide releases): 14

DIRECTORS

By watching 423 movies, I was able to explore a small fraction of the creative minds of 405 different directors.

DIRECTOR GENDER

Of these 423 films, 32 were directed by women and 12 had split male/female co-directors, meaning about 10% of all films were directed by women. This is an area that I am actively looking to improve upon this next year.

MOST WATCHED DIRECTOR

With 5 films; Shock (1977), A Bay of Blood (1971). Kill, … Baby Kill (1966), Black Sabbath (1963), and Blood and Black Lace (1964); Mario Bava is my most watched director of 2021.

LANGUAGES

Throughout the year I watched horror films in 19 different languages: with my most watched non-English language films being either French (12 films) and Italian (12 films). In total, 60 films were presented in a non-English language. This is another area that I am actively looking to improve upon this next year.

COUNTRIES

I watched horror films from 32 different countries.

Top Countries:

Ireland (5)

Germany/West Germany (5)

South Korea (6)

Australia (8)

France (17)

Italy (26)

Canada (35)

United Kingdom (46)

United States (221)

Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Russia/Soviet Union, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia

RATING STATS

The average score I gave movies throughout 2021 is a 5.37 with the most common score of 7/10, followed closely by 6/10.

And that’s it! I hope you enjoyed these fun facts and that you join me in diversifying your horror watching experience as I continue to strive to do!
