2022 Year in Review Posts:
Now that 2022 has finally passed, I can write this more personal diary entry for the year. This will mostly consist of fun statistics I tracked throughout the year, which will help me establish what sort of goals I’ll have for 2023.
TOTAL MOVIES WATCHED
From January to December, I watched a total of 393 horror films. This is slightly less than 2021 where I watched 423. This year presented more challenges to me in my personal and professional life as well as I reviewed far more movies this year, meaning I had to spend more time writing than watching.
YEARS
When were all the movies I watched made?
1910s: 1
1920s: 1
1930s: 0
1940s: 0
1950s: 1
1960s: 2
1970s: 40
1980s: 49
1990s: 28
2000s: 13
2010s: 23
2020s: 208
Unreleased (Film Festival Releases without wide releases): 27
DIRECTORS
By watching 393 movies, I was able to explore a small fraction of the creative minds of 372 different directors.
DIRECTOR GENDER
Of these 393 films, 42 were directed by women and 14 had split male/female co-directors, meaning about 14% of all films were directed by women. This is an area that I was actively looking to improve upon this year and I succeeded in increasing the number (by 12) and percentage (by 4%). This is an area I would like to continue working on and I am excited to see the growing cultivation of female directors given how many new releases this includes (36 of the 42 films).
MOST WATCHED DIRECTOR
With 3 films each; City of the Living Dead (1980), Manhattan Baby (1982), and Aenigma (1987); The Fifth Cord (1971), The Girl in Room 2A (1974), and Footprints on the Moon (1975); Lucio Fulci and Luigi Bazzoni are my most watched directors of 2022.
LANGUAGES
Throughout the year I watched horror films in 28 different languages: with my most watched non-English language films being Spanish (20 films). In total, 87 films were presented in a non-English language. This was another area that I was actively looking to improve upon this year and I succeeded by increasing the total number of films by 27 and a wider variety of languages (28 compared to 19). I look forward to continuing this trend in 2023.
