March 2023 Review: The Best Movies I Saw Last Month

Originally published April 19, 2023

Another month has come and gone. It’s taken much longer to get this month in review out than I would normally like, so I’ll keep it brief. Last month I watched 26 horror films for the first time and did not re-watch anything. Here are my favorites from March.

Re-Watch Highlight: N/A

BEST #6) Jack Be Nimble (1994); Director: Garth Maxwell; Australia

After being left to fend for themselves by their parents, Jack and Dora grow up living very different lives with their separate foster families. Dora lives a life of relative comfort and joy despite longing for her brother. Jack is brought up in an abusive home tortured by his new parents and four adoptive sisters. Both Jack and Dora know they are different from others, each gifted with different psychic abilities. When their lives come to a boil and the pull to reunite is too great, a series of events will initiate that will change their lives forever. A strange Australian oddity, Jack Be Nimble is a dark mediation on the effects of childhood trauma and adverse experiences. Overzealous performances and bizarre storytelling choices are bolstered by consistent character development and a truly creepy atmosphere. This is one of those films that is best watched with tempered expectations as the low budget can show at times. Still, there is something incredibly exciting about something bold, unique, and scary in the early 90s horror-sphere that makes Jack Be Nimble a film to seek out now.
