October 2022 Review: The Best Movies I Saw Last Month

I am beyond disappointed with my October watch history. I planned on checking out way more movies than I did. Unfortunately, between work, some trips, and general laziness I did not get a chance to do much this month. On top of that, the overall quality of movies was low too. Between 17 Number of First Time Watches and 2 Number of Re-watches, I didn’t even crack 20 films!

I did check out some solid movies this month so read below to see what my favorites are!

Re-Watch Highlight: None.

October is another month where I didn’t re-watch a film and subsequently update its rating. I did, however, enjoy rewatching Sorority Row again.

BEST #6) Sole Survivor (1984); Director: Thom Eberhardt; United States

Denise is the only survivor of a deadly plane crash, walking away from the wreckage without a scratch. Her survival is predicted by an aging actress known for her psychic abilities. She tries to warn Denise before she gets on the plane and makes many efforts to warn her of the danger that follows. What sort of trouble can Denise get into after surviving such a terrible thing? Well, death doesn’t seem interested in letting her get away too easily. She is systematically haunted by creeping specters of possessed dead bodies determined to make Denise join them on the other side. Sole Survivor is a creepy precursor to several beloved modern films that still feels fresh and engaging. An unexpectedly meditative film on the grief and guilt of surviving, this 80s gem asks provocative questions for a relatively tame slasher. Denise is given the opportunity to truly process her experience while still fighting for her life against the elements of death, which makes for a rather compelling narrative. It does get bogged down by its limp pacing at times and the actors do tend to hit or miss their mark quite a bit through the film. Regardless, Sole Survivor is a delightfully fun and harmless supernatural horror film with enough dread to make you fear surviving more than dying.
